Auto Insurance... For All
The Insurance Information Centre offers guidance and assistance to consumers who are having difficulty getting
car insurance. According to the Automobile Insurance Act, anyone who owns and operates a vehicle in Québec
must have at least $50,000 in civil liability insurance to guarantee compensation for any property damage the
vehicle might cause.
By following a uniform and rigorous procedure, which is known as the Access to Auto Insurance Mechanism, the
Information Centre agent can help make arrangements to provide the consumer with insurance, under terms that
are acceptable to both parties. Through the Information Centre, the consumer benefits from a mechanism that
allows him or her to obtain insurance, and thus to comply with legislation.
Home Insurance: It's a Matter of Choice
Although there is no legal obligation to have home insurance – consumers are free to decide whether or not
purchase this type of insurance – IBC has developed and administers an Access to Home Insurance mechanism
to help consumers who have tried but were unable to find home insurance.
